I flick on the flashlight and shine it under her bed. There’s the rabbit, snuggled up between Libby’s princess dress and the teddy bear, fast asleep. The rabbit blinks at the light and sits up. Then he yawns and stretches and sets to work washing the teddy bear’s ears. The carnage doesn’t look like much from here, so I pull Libby’s things out one at a time, for a closer inspection. But I can’t believe it. Not one of them has been chewed or peed on. Not the dress, the shoes, or the diary. Not even so much as any teeth marks. Unbelievable!

The rabbit has finished bathing the teddy bear and has flopped down beside it. I grab the teddy bear and yank it out. The rabbit sits up and gives me a very displeased look.

“You want your little furry buddy?” I whisper. “Then get back in the closet.”

The rabbit stares at me for a few seconds, and then it hops out from under the bed.

I scoop it up before it can run and carry both it and the teddy bear to my bedroom and lock them both in my closet.
